🏠 Mortgage Rates at 3% Could Reignite Canadian Housing Market
According to a recent Edmonton Journal article, mortgage rates need to drop to 3% to get Canada's housing market fired up again. This number comes from a recent BMO survey, which found that 68% of prospective homebuyers cite current borrowing rates as a stumbling block.
📈 US Mortgage Rates Jump Above 7% After Credit Downgrade
MarketWatch reports that mortgage rates surged after Moody's downgraded U.S. debt, pushing the 30-year fixed-rate to 7.04%. According to Realtor.com economist Jake Krimmel, this is "really not ideal for prospective buyers" in a market already struggling with affordability issues.
However, price cuts are becoming more commonplace, with 25% of listings on Zillow seeing a price cut in April.
🏡 Stable Mortgage Rates Drawing Buyers Back to US Housing Market
The National Association of REALTORS® reports that mortgage demand from prospective home buyers rose for the second consecutive week, with mortgage loan application volume 18% higher than the same week one year ago.
Less volatile mortgage rates—steadying in the mid- to high-6% range—and more housing inventory (up 20% in the past year) may be prompting more home buyers to come off the sidelines.
